Sodium nitrite blends are a standard offering among water treatment companies. However, treatment chemicals are available that are more effective than nitrite and have none of the drawbacks.

Nitrite treatment is a poor choice for closed systems because it:

• Is an environmental toxin.
• Is aggressive to copper and brass.
• Hardens rubber seals and gaskets.
• Is food for microbes that cause fouling.
• Raises conductivity, promoting corrosion.
• Forms abrasive crystals at evaporation sites.
